World news: GigaContent tests new technology for international
content exchange
January 16, 2011
Global content technology and services are developing at a rapid
pace, and GigaContent is right at the cutting edge: During the next
couple of weeks GigaContent will be testing an entirely new
concept: International exchange of content in the form of
JPEG2000-compressed video. All leading solution manufacturers are
participating in the tests.
When the solution is ready it will become possible to deliver
content - e.g. live TV or other forms of video - across country
borders and even across continents much faster and more effectively
than before - and completely without the use of satellite
connections.
As the first company or organisation in the world, GigaContent
has invited all of the world's leading JPEG2000 equipment vendors
to participate in a common open test of the new technology. This is
the first step towards the establishment of a new international
standard for the exchange of content.
- This is the first time in history that JPEG2000 compression is
being tested in this way, i.e. in an open test together with all of
the most important equipment vendors. After we have completed our
tests we will know exactly by how much we can compress an SD video
signal with JPEG2000 without causing quality degradation. In this
way we are laying the foundation for an entirely new worldwide way
of exchanging content internationally, and this way is much more
effective because it requires much less network capacity than
previously. This means that content can be delivered more
flexibly and less expensively than before, says Brian Slott, CTO
for GigaContent.
Keep an eye on this site for more news on new services and
solutions from GigaContent and the latest technological
developments. The following equipment vendors are participating in
the test: Cisco, T-Vips, Nevion, MediaLinks, and Tektronis.
